As the jet lifted from the ground, Sage felt that same whirling in her stomach she had on the Ferris wheel the night she and Carter kissed for the first time. But this wasn’t inertia or the anticipation of things to come.

It was uncertainty. There was something amiss with Carter. Something that made her wonder if saying yes to this trip had been a mistake. His smile seemed forced when he met them at the airport, and she could have sworn she saw regret flash through his eyes when he boarded the jet.

Maybe he was just upset about what Morgan did at the pound or…maybe he was having second thoughts about inviting her. If so, there was little she could do about it now except grin and bear whatever was to come. They were ascending into the air with Idaho and his parents waiting for them.

Morgan soon moved from his seat to the copilot seat and slid on a pair of headphones. Chloe moved to the back area near the restroom to play.

She and Carter were, for the most part, alone.

Sage reached into her purse and found the plastic tub of brownies she’d packed for the flight. After peeling the top back, she held it out to him. “You look like you could use a brownie.”

Raising his brows high in what she thought was the sexiest kind of amused grin, he picked two from the first row. “Do you always travel with a tub of brownies in your purse?”

She laughed. “Now you know my selling secret. I pull them out when buyers are on the fence.”

“They’re delicious,” he said, devouring the first one in two bites. “First Pierogies, now brownies. Where did you learn to cook like this?”

“Pasta from a box and spicing up my Grandma Maude’s brownie recipe with Cayenne pepper hardly makes me a master chef.” But it was nice to share her love of cooking with someone who appreciated it.

“I don’t doubt that you could have made the pasta yourself, and these are no ordinary brownies,” he said, biting into the other one. “I knew I tasted Cayenne. Have you taken classes before?”

She cringed inwardly because to answer him, she’d have to talk about her ex again. She promised herself she’d restrain from going too deep and just skim over the surface.

“When Allen and I were first married, I enrolled in culinary school. I was a month away from completing my first semester when he said he wanted a baby, so,” she walked the few feet that separated the cockpit from the cabin and held the tub between Morgan and the pilot, “I got pregnant and didn’t go back.”

They each took one.

Carter swallowed then frowned as she walked past him and to the back where Chloe was. “That seems unfair.”

“There was nothing fair about our marriage.” She broke a brownie in half and gave it to Chloe then walked back to her seat. “Nothing sacred. Nothing loving or true. He was never home during the pregnancy, didn’t go to any of the doctor’s appointments with me, and he wasn’t there for the delivery.
